Young Farmers

One of the longest running projects on the farm, Young Farmers, takes on children from 8 years old and immerses them in farm life.

Our Young Farmers are taught to take care of our animals, including health & safety, proper handling, feeding & watering, grooming, health checks, plus mucking out & rebedding.

They tend to the Young Farmers Garden, learning about planting and general horticulture.

Currently Young Farmers costs £26 per month to attend – which works out £6.50 for 48 weeks per year.

Volunteering & Opportunities

Outside of our regular programme, our Young Farmers take part in the annual London City Farms and Gardens Harvest Festival where they are judged on their knowledge and their animal handling skill. This gives them an opportunity to show off what they’ve learned in a small-scale country show setting.

They sometimes go away on trips, previous trips have included Audley End, camping at Thriftwood, and the Essex Young Farmers Show. These are not funded by the farm, but costs are usually kept to a minimum.

Young Farmers also help to run events at the farm, improving teamwork, communication skills, and giving them confidence to deal with members of the public when introducing them to our animals and answering their questions.

Young Farmers represent us with our mobile farm at some public events. Some of the community events we’ve covered include seasonal events in Collier Row and The View / Queen’s Hunting Lodge in Chingford, and at local events across Havering, Redbridge, and Barking & Dagenham.
